SY Chan’s main areas of practice are in Family Law and Probate matters. She is also familiar with conveyancing matters. She has been in active practice since being called to the Bar in March 1992. As she was previously an ASEAN Scholar who did her education at Hwa Chong Junior College, she is conversant in the Malay language as well as in Mandarin. SY Chan also scored a Distinction in the Malay language.

SY Chan is familiar with Probate application for non-Muslim as well as Muslim estates.

For Probate applications, SY Chan prides herself in working at top speed without compromising on her accuracy and has even successfully obtained a Grant of Probate for a non-Muslim estate in less than one week recently.

Her speed turned out to be a pivotal point in the case, as an interested party (the wife of the Testator) had lodged a Caveat against the Grant in one matter, but the lodgement of the Caveat had only come in only after the extraction and issuance of the Grant.

In this particular matter, the joint tenancy of the property had been severed and had been carried out immediately upon instructions. SY Chan’s speed paid off as the matter which was anticipated to be highly contested, became non-contested as a result.

The experience in this area of work has enabled her to deal with both contested and uncontested probate matters.

For matrimonial matters, SY Chan was the lead counsel in a 42 half days trial for a contested divorce matter in which she successfully argued the Plaintiff’s case and succeeded in dismissing the Defendant’s Counter-Claim with costs in the Plaintiff’s favour which was taxed. She has also successfully argued many other contested matrimonial matters including appeals to the High Court. Being familiar with conveyancing practice has helped SY Chan draft workable court orders.
